The Baldwin Hills Dam Collapse

Some say that oil and water don't mix, and that was proven in 1963 with the collapse of the Baldwin Hills Dam. Water plays an imporant role in the history of Los Angeles, and of the Baldwin Hills. Built in 1951, the Baldwin Hills Dam held water for the residents on the west side of Los Angeles. On December 14th, 1963, the dam collapsed killing five and destroying 65 homes. The dam was not rebuilt and its site was filled in to make way for the Kenneth Hahn State Recreation area. More information on the dam collapse can be found through the links below.

Who was Lucky Baldwin

The Baldwin Hills were named for "Lucky" Baldwin. Information about Lucky Baldwin can be found from the sources below.

Olympic Athletes Village in the Baldwin Hills

The Baldwin Hills was the site of the first Olympic Village for the modern Olympic games. The village was built for the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games, but not much remains of the village. Follow this link for more information on the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Athletes Village in the Baldwin Hills.

About this site:

On this web site you will find information about the Baldwin Hills Park plan, geology, plants, and wildlife within the planned park, neigboring communities, and activities at the parks that already exist within the boundaries of the planned Baldwin Hills Park. This is not an official site of the park, and I ask for help from anyone that can correct any information I might post, or who has additional links or resources to suggest.
